The IT Operations Engineer is responsible for ensuring the reliable, secure, and efficient operation of an organization's IT infrastructure. They manage and maintain critical systems, monitor performance, and address technical challenges to support business needs. This role bridges technology and operations, playing a vital part in achieving organizational goals by ensuring seamless IT operations.
Responsibilities
System Operations and Maintenance
Ensure the continuous availability of IT infrastructure, including servers, networks, and storage systems.
Perform regular maintenance activities such as updates, patches, and backups to maintain system health and security.
Monitor IT systems to proactively identify and resolve issues, minimizing downtime.
Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and network issues in a timely manner.
Network Operations
Manage and maintain network devices such as routers, switches, and firewalls
Monitor network performance and optimize for reliability and speed
Implement network configurations to ensure secure and efficient data flow
Collaborate with the Network Operations Center (NOC) and ISPs to address connectivity or performance issues, both proactively and reactively
IT Security
Implement and maintain security measures to safeguard IT systems and data
Configure firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and access control mechanisms
Respond to and mitigate security incidents such as breaches or malware attacks.
System Monitoring and Optimization
Making sure the data center’s SLAs are followed
Utilize monitoring tools (e.g., Nagios, Zabbix, PRTG) to oversee system and network health
Analyze system logs and performance data to identify areas for improvement
Recommend and implement strategies to optimize system and network efficiency
Documentation and Reporting
Maintain comprehensive documentation of IT infrastructure, configurations, and processes
Generate regular reports on system performance, incidents, and operational metrics.
Develop and update IT policies and procedures as needed
Collaboration and Communication
Work closely with cross-functional teams, including developers, system administrators, and business units, to support IT needs
Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
Provide technical support and training to end users as required
Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's or higher degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related fields
Experience: 3-5 years of experience in IT infrastructure, system administration, or IT operations
Technical Skills:
Proficiency with operating systems (Linux/Unix) and associated technologies
Hands-on experience with virtualization platforms and cloud computing
Strong understanding of network protocols
Familiarity with enterprise networking systems
Familiarity with data center infrastructure and operations
Knowledge of IT security practices and tools, such as firewalls and antivirus solutions
Tools and Certifications:
Experience with IT monitoring and alerting tools
Network security certifications are a plus.
Soft Skills:
Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities
